Lemuel Holifield is the second of four children; he has one older sister and two younger brothers. His father is a
Baptist Minster who has been pasturing his church for eight years. His mother works as a schoolteacher and
volleyball coach. His parents met when his mother moved to Johnson City, Tennessee following her collegiate
basketball and field hockey careers at Temple University.
In his high school years, Holifield was a two-sport star. Football and Track and Field were his two loves. Holifield
enjoyed much success in track and field placing seventh in the 400 meter hurdles at the Junior Olympics in 2001.
In addition to his athletic success, Holifield made time for and in excelled in academics. He was graduated from
high school with a 3.5 GPA and secured a scholarship to attend University of the Cumberlands.
While attending University of the Cumberlands Holifield again chose the two-sport route. Continuing his success
in track, he qualified for the NAIA national meet six times in the 600 meters indoor race, and in the outdoor 400
meter hurdles and 400 meter relay. Holifield’s personal best time in the 400 meter hurdles was the school’s 2nd
fastest time in school history.
Holifield’s success was not limited to the track. He also showcased his talents on the gridiron. As a 3-year starter
and 2-year captain, Holifield anchored one of the strongest defenses in the country. His junior year Holifield lead
the defense in 4 statistical categories and earned All-Conference and All-American honors. He followed up his
senior season with a strong campaign despite the complete change of coaching staff and system, earning
Preseason All-American honors and All- Conference honors as well.
The honors earned on the track and football field carried over into the classroom. School was always the main
focus for Holifield. He was a two-time Academic All Conference performer as well as a NAIA Champions of
Character recipient. Holifield Graduated from University of the Cumberlands in May 2008 with a double major in
biology and exercise sports science.
