My name is Lionel Hickenbottom, I was born and raised in Chicago , Illinois .  I began to play football when I was
seven years old with the Dolton Bears, a team that produced many athletes such as Donovan McNabb and Reggie
Hayward, who are both currently active in the NFL today.  I continued my career at Paul Robeson High School and
played under a great coach by the name of Roy Curry.  I played multiple positions such as quarterback, running
back, wide receiver, defensive back, punter, kicker, and return specialist.  The football experience in high school
prepared me to further my career at Northern Illinois University where I played free safety for the Huskies under the
head coach Joe Novak.  I started at NIU as a prop 48 but in 2001 I earned a full ride scholarship and started as
free safety.  My second game of my collegiate career I played against the University of Illinois I had 17 tackles,
which allowed me to receive player of the week.  I received that title multiple times due to great performances. In
2004 we were the first team in twenty years to go to the Silicon Valley Classic Bowl Game, where we claimed the
victory and I received defensive MVP award.  That year I was also chosen as team co-captain.  During my
collegiate career I had 33 starts, recorded 301 tackles, 11 interceptions, 24 pass deflections, and 2 touchdowns.
As a kick return, I had 16 kick returns, 376 yards, with an average of 22 yards per return. I am 6 ft. tall and weigh
195 pounds.  On my NFL pro day I clocked at 4.66 and 4.71 in the 40 yd dash.  I had 4.32 for the short shuttle,
11.39 for long shuttle, 6.67 for the three cone drill, 9ft. 6’ for the long jump, 32’ vertical jump, and 11 reps for the
225 lb. bench press.

After my college career I became an unsigned free agent.  I was invited to join the Cleveland Browns three day
mini-camp. After that I went to the Canada Football League where I was picked up by the Montreal Alouettes for
their summer camp.  Soon after, I returned to NIU where I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Communications
with an emphasis in Media Studies.

After graduating, I was part of a major universal motion picture titled The Ernie Davis Story “The Express” in which I
played the main stunt double for Ernie Davis, who was the first black Heisman Trophy winner at Syracuse
University in 1960.  I was also a stunt double for Jim Brown and Floyd Little.

I am currently working at Washington Junior High as a permanent certified substitute teacher.  I also volunteer as
a football coach for the Harvey Colts, which is an outstanding football organization for children.  I coach players
who range in ages of nine to eleven.

I would greatly enjoy the opportunity to go overseas to advance my career as a professional athlete.  I believe my
football abilities will allow me to contribute and compete in the European Football League.  I also look forward to
being part of a team that consists of players from different countries and cultures.  I know I will learn from my
teammates and coaches and it will enhance my world view.

I should be selected by a team because I am a natural leader and a true team player.  I lead by example, working
hard and pushing myself and others to do their best.  I am a team player because I understand the different roles
on the team and know that it takes working with others to win. If asked to play by a team I would thank them for the
opportunity and tell them that I will do the best I can as a leader and team player to lead them to multiple victories
and hopefully a European Super Bowl.
