International Federation of American Football
American Football is a fascinating sport that has drawn people from over 50 countries
on all 6 continents into its spell. The United States has found its fan base throughout
the countries of the world.

The first national American football federations outside of the United States were
founded in 1896 in Canada, 1936 in Japan, and Europe in 1976. Since then the sport
has experienced a significant expansion, especially in Europe, which finally reached its
first pinnacle through the founding of EFAF (European Federation of American Football)
in 1996 followed by IFAF (International Federation of American Football) in 1998. The
GAISF (General Association of International Sports Federations) became a provisional
member in 2003 and a full member in 2005.

representing 23 million athletes worldly.

IFAF is cooperating closely with major US American Football organizations like the National Football League (NFL)
and the National College Athletic Association (NCAA).

The goals of the organisation are: to be part of the international sporting community (Admission into the General
Association of International Sports Federation, acceptance by the IOC , Participation in the World Games as well as
the Olympic Games) and membership development.

Competitions are the objective of IFAF. Competitions are the base of friendly relationships between countries and
peoples.

The 1st IFAF World Championships took place in 1999 in Italy and continental competitions are now being played
for the 20th year in a row. The second World Cup was in 2003 in Frankfurt (Germany). The third appearance of
American Football as an international sport was at the World Games 2005 where IFAF played a championship with
Germany as gold medal winner, being the sport with the highest attendance of all sports in the World Games 2005.

The major event of the upcoming year will be the 3rd IFAF World Championships 2007 at the Kawasaki (Japan), a
major Japanese city next to Tokyo, July 7-15, 2007. After the qualification rounds seeing 21 countries participating,
